“You want us to do what?” I asked, incredulous, as soon as Kane told me about his plan.

“I want us to pose as a married couple trying to have a baby. Then we can use that to look at the birth records at the local hospital. What’s so wrong about that?”

“I’m not usually in the pretending to be someone else business, if you know what I mean,” I said.

“Neither am I, but it’s a useful skill to use on occasion. And now you can learn on the job,” he said. He seemed really excited about the idea.

“So you already got us an appointment?”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said excitedly. “I didn’t have time to create fake IDs, so I used our real names. So we’re just planning to get married, but we haven’t gotten married yet. And we’re just going there for regular testing to see if we could have children.”

“That sounds like a terrible idea. I’m absolutely not going through any tests, that’s for sure,” I said. “You’ll have to find someone else. Maybe that reporter Lucy you know so well?”

Kane laughed. “You’re being silly. We won’t actually have to go through any of the tests. We just have to get inside the building and have a distraction plan for the doctor that’s supposed to see us. And then when he’s gone, we can get inside the system and find what we’re looking for.”

“I guess that doesn’t sound so bad, except for the lying thing. The sheriff already doesn’t like me, if I get caught impersonating or lying to people, I don’t know what he would do. Probably throw me in a cold cell for the rest of my life.”

Kane chuckled. “You worry too much,” he said. “Good PIs don’t get caught, haven’t you ever heard that?”

“Can’t say I have,” I said.

“Well, it’s true,” he said. “So are you in or out?”

I rolled my eyes. And sighed for good measure. But I had to admit that I had nothing else to do. So why not go on this crazy mission with Kane?

“Fine,” I finally relented. “Should I go home and dress more appropriately?”

Kane looked me up and down. “That’s probably a good idea,” he said. Then he looked at what he was wearing. A leather jacket and jeans. “Maybe I’ll do the same. I’ll pick you up at your place in half an hour, how does that sound?”

“Sounds great,” I said as I got into my car.

Rebecca and Darius were already in the back seat.

“This is gonna be so much fun,” Rebecca said.

“Do you really think the medical records are still there? And if they are, that you’ll be able to find them?” Darius asked.

“There’s only one way to find out,” I said.
